Rest In Peace, My Sweet Jake

Sep 22, 2025 | Pet Health, Pets, Uncategorized

Today I write with overwhelming sadness as I pay tribute to our Jake.  His sudden passing has left us heartbroken.  My words can’t describe the pain we feel without him.  Jake passed away last week from a large cancerous mass on his spleen that ruptured, metastasized, causing internal bleeding in the abdomen and pressure against his intestines and organs.  It happened fast, and there was nothing we could do to save him. With him in pain, we made the tough decision to let him go.

A Tribute to Jake – Our Sweet Soul

We say goodbye to Jake, the dog who filled our lives with joy, laughter, and endless love.  He wasn’t just a pet—he was family, a loyal companion, and a constant source of warmth and comfort.  Jake had a personality unlike any other, a blend of humor, gentleness, and an effortlessly laid-back spirit that made him a joy to be around.

From the moment he entered our lives, we knew he was something special.  His funny little quirks never failed to make us smile, whether it was the way he’d roll over for belly rubs without a second thought or how he’d nudge you with his nose to remind you that he was there—ready for some attention, ready for love.  Jake was a Velcro dog, for sure, and never left my side.  He is everywhere I look, everywhere I am, but I cannot reach down to pet him now.  How I wish I could hold his face, look into his soft brown eyes, and tell him he was my goodest boy.

He was always by our side, his calm presence offering reassurance in even the most difficult times.  His eyes spoke volumes, full of trust and understanding, and no matter how busy life got, he always had time for a cuddle, a wag of the tail, or a simple, joyful little jump in the air.  Jake’s ability to be content with the simplest things—like lying on the couch next to me in his favorite spot—was a reminder to all of us to appreciate the little moments.  How I wish his big boxy head were lying on my lap right now.

His love was unconditional, his loyalty unwavering.  We will forever treasure the memories of our little vacations, the quiet moments spent together, and the way he would curl up beside us, offering his gentle comfort without saying a word.  Jake slept with me for 8 years, taking up all the room on my side of the bed every night, snoring in my ear, and waking me up at the crack of dawn every morning.  How I wish I could have one more night with him.  Jake’s heart was as big as his paws, and his spirit will live on in every corner of our hearts.  We will pay tribute to him with a memorial in our yard by planting his favorite shrubs.  Jake loved running along our shrubs, pushing his head in and out as I yelled, “Jake, Stop It!” How I wish I could say that again.

Though his time with us was far too short, Jake’s impact was immeasurable.  His gentle soul left paw prints on our hearts that will never fade. We take comfort knowing that, in his own special way, Jake brought light into our lives every single day.  Jake’s face would light up, and his little smile would cross his face in his most adorable moments.  His eyes radiated unconditional love.

Jake, you will be forever missed.  Our sadness is overwhelming and suffocating.  We would have done anything if it had saved you.  We will hold on to the laughter, the love, and the warmth you gave us.  Rest easy, our sweet boy.  You were truly one of a kind.  You were taken way too soon. Your leash still hangs where it always was. Your bed and favorite blankets are still here. Your collar and all of your bow ties are in the decorative box that matched your personality. Some day I will be able to put that box away, but not for now.  Watch over Maggie, my sweet boy. She misses you so very much.

My Little Chocolate Chip

I called you my little chocolate chip when you were a baby.  Then you got so big so fast, and I called you my chocolate chunk.  Now you are my angel.

The terrible cancer that invaded Jake’s body is called Canine Splenic Hemangiosarcoma (HSA).

Hemangiosarcoma (HSA) is a highly aggressive tumor that arises from the cells that make up the blood vessels. These cells undergo a genomic alteration from normal to malignant that allows them to escape the body’s normal surveillance system and allows them to proliferate and grow. HSA can occur most anywhere in the body, but it most commonly develops in the spleen, liver, heart, and skin.

HSA is highly aggressive and locally invasive. It invades and destroys the organs in which it arises. It also avidly metastasizes or spreads to sites elsewhere in the body. Metastasis is a process in which tumor cells leave the primary tumor site through the blood or lymph systems. These cells then travel to other sites in the body, where the malignant cells can take root and grow into new nodules or masses. HSA most commonly spreads to the liver, mesentery, and lungs.

Jake, when I last held your face, I told you to find Bear, Bella, and Lady and run free.  You gave me kisses and looked at me as if you understood.  My tears landed on your nose, and then you were gone.  You and I were so connected.  We still are in spirit.  You knew I needed to see that you were ok.  You have given me the signs that let me know you are at peace.  From the brown Praying Mantis on the garage door the day you passed, the snow white feather on the shrubs you used to love running through, the raindrops on my windshield, the butterfly and the turtle sitting in your favorite spots, to the vivid dream where I could hold you again.

Signs from the Spirit World, Signs from Jake, and Their Meaning

Brown Praying Mantis – The brown color can symbolize groundedness and a connection to the earth, while the mantis itself represents stillness, wisdom, and patience. It can be a message that everything is okay and the energy of the lost one is transitioning to a universal consciousness, offering comfort to those experiencing grief.

White Feather – Finding a white feather after a pet’s death is often interpreted as a comforting sign of their continued presence or a message from a spiritual source, such as an angel or guardian spirit. White feathers symbolize peace, purity, faith, and protection, indicating that your beloved pet is at peace and watching over you. It’s a spiritual message confirming you are not alone and that your pet’s love and memory live on.

Large drops of rain on our windshield – The next day after your passing, we took Maggie to OSU for her final checkup after her ACL surgery.  When we take the last exit after a long trip back from Columbus, we always say…” we made it home.”  As we came to our stop, a handful of heavy drops of rain hit our windshield.  The weather remained unchanged, the sky remained blue, and the rain was brief.  Jake, were you shedding tears for us?

Seeing rain a day after a pet’s death can be interpreted in several ways, from a traditional symbol of cleansing and renewal to a personal metaphor for grief and tears, and even a sign of spiritual connection to the departed. While its meaning is largely cultural and personal, rain can represent a symbolic washing away of pain, the sky shedding tears in sorrow, or the spiritual transition of the pet’s soul to a new stage of existence.

The baby turtle and the butterfly – I opened up the door last weekend and found a baby turtle lying in the spot where you would stand, waiting for me to let you in.  This baby looked at me for a few seconds and slowly walked off.  Two hours later, I found a giant monarch butterfly in the garage where you used to lie and watch us work.

The appearance of a turtle or butterfly, after a pet’s loss, can be seen as a sign that your pet is at peace and their soul has transformed into a new, beautiful form.

My dream – Two nights after you passed, you came to me in a dream.  I kept saying that I wished I could see you one more time.  You let me have that.  I held you, told you how much I loved you, and you looked into my eyes as you always had, and understood.

I am grateful for all the love and support we have received.  Your kind messages, cards, texts, and phone calls will not be forgotten.  They have helped me heal slowly.  We are adjusting to a new normal without Jake and giving Maggie all of the time and attention she needs.  I will retain the Two Adorable Labs name and logo and continue to run the blog as before.

I have written blogs on loss in the past, never realizing I would need to call on them so soon.  If you have experienced this kind of loss, my heart goes out to you.  Dealing With The Death Of A Pet is incredibly hard.

Thank you to Pleasant Valley Animal Clinic and Blue Pearl Emergency Hospital for doing everything you could to save Jake.

Rest In Peace, My Sweet Jake.

Thank you so much. He loved you with all his heart. His Aunt Carla was a very special person in his life. When he heard his Aunt Carla was coming over, he would run to the door and wag his tail back and forth with such joy and excitement.

What a beautiful tribute to Jake. He was one lucky dog to have you and Thomas for his mom and dad. You and Thomas always went above and beyond for your dogs. I’m so sorry for your loss. It is so hard when we loose our furry family members. May you find some comfort in all your wonderful memories and I hope each day gets a little easier for you. I love all the pictures but my favorite was the one with just his head sticking out of the bushes.❤️🐾💔🐾
