Beer Braised Bratwurst Sandwich

Jul 8, 2021 | Food, Sandwiches

Happy Friday everyone!  For all the Bratwurst lovers out there, I made this Beer Braised Bratwurst Sandwich for you!  I first found this recipe on Better Homes and Gardens but veered off of it pretty quickly as soon as the onions hit the pan!  There are so many ways you can make bratwurst from grilling them to sautéing over a stove.  These are great as an appetizer, a sandwich, over a plate of pasta, or for breakfast.  With a few simple ingredients, you can make enough for dinner and leftovers for the next day.  I normally say lab tested, doggie approved but this time it is Mr. TAL tested and approved.  For those of you who are new to the blog, Mr. TAL is my sweet husband Thomas :-). He gave these Beer Braised Bratwurst Sandwiches a 10 out of a 10 you guys!!!  Woo hoo!

First, cut 2 small sweet onions into slices and sauté in 4 tablespoons butter until almost soft.  Combine beer, brown sugar, vinegar, thyme, Worcestershire sauce and cook on medium heat until onions are soft.  Lay 5 bratwurst in beer/onion mixture and cover for about 10 minutes.

Remove bratwurst to another pan, add olive oil and cook until the skin starts to turn crispy.  While bratwurst is cooking, keep turning the beer/onion mixture.  Add cornstarch to thicken the broth and transfer the bratwurst and olive oil to that pan.  Keep cooking and turning the dish while you cook the green and red peppers.

Cut 2 green peppers and 2 red peppers into slices and sauté until soft.  Add your olive oil, garlic salt, garlic powder, and pepper to lightly coat the peppers.

In the same pan that you seared your bratwurst, add butter and toast your bread or buns (whichever you choose).  Turn heat off, add your cheese, and let it melt over the bun.  In this case, I used slices of Extra Sharp Cheddar.  Now it is time to assembly your sandwich!!
I layered each side of the toasted bun with cheese.  On one side of the bun I layered the green and red peppers.  On the other side, I added the beer soaked onions and bratwurst.  It was originally going to be an open face sandwich but Thomas had other plans for it.  A smile came across his face when I handed him his plate and he quickly put the sandwich together and took a big bite :-).

These bratwurst can be marinated in the beer broth and then cooked on the grill if you prefer.  We just bought a new Blackstone Griddle but it was raining so I was stuck in the house.  I bet these would have an amazing taste on the grill and be so easy to make.  This recipe takes about a half hour to make.  Add a side of horseradish sauce, jalapeños, chips, French fries, and/or macaroni salad to complete this meal!  Make the following morning with eggs for a filling breakfast.  Cut bratwurst up, add a piece of cheese and stick with a decorative toothpick for a party appetizer just to name a few ways to serve this dish.

Course: Main Course
Cuisine: American
Keyword: Bratwurst, cheese, beer, onions, peppers
Servings: 5

Ingredients

  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 2 sweet onions
  • 1 bottle of beer (I used German beer)
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp white vinegar
  • 1 tsp thyme
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 5 bratwurst
  • 5 hoagie buns, rolls, or italian bread
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 red peppers, sliced
  • 2 green peppers, sliced
  • 10 slices extra sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tbsp pepper
  • 1/2 tbsp garlic salt

Instructions

  • Slice onions and add to pan. Cook in 4 tablespoons butter. I used salted butter from Land O' Lakes. Cook until onions are almost soft.
  • Add beer, brown sugar, vinegar, thyme, Worcestershire sauce and stir until onoins are soft.
  • Add bratwurst and cook for approximately 10 minutes.
  • Transfer bratwurst to another pan and cook in olive oil until sides are crispy.
  • Return bratwurst to pan with onion/beer mixture, add cornstarch, and cook on medium heat while you cook the peppers.
  • Cut green and red peppers into slices. Add to a seperate pan with olive oil, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Cook until soft.
  • While peppers are cooking, use the pan that you sauted' the bratwurst in and toast your bread or buns. Add butter to the pan but keep watching to make sure the buns do not burn.
  • When peppers are done, buns are toasted, turn the heat off and assembly your sandwich.

Notes

This recipe came with a Easy Cranberry-Pickle Relish.  If you would like to make it, combine:
1/2 cup canned whole cranberry sauce and 1/4 cup sweet pickle relish.  In a small bowl, combine both ingredients together.
Another option would be to combine 1/2 cup mayonnaise and 1/4 cup sweet pickle relish together.
Cut into bratwurst to make sure they are done inside.  I normally cut down the length of the bratwurst and lay flat to crisp up the inside.
Want to make this dish "hot", add hot pepper flakes or 1/4 cup of hot sauce while cooking the bratwurst in olive oil.

I love hearing from all of you and do my best to respond to each and every one of you.  I always enjoy your comments, feedback, and suggestions so keep them coming!  If I’ve posted a recipe (for our human and our furry friends) and you try it, don’t forget to tag me on Instagram @twoadorablelabs and use #twoadorablelabs.
