Dog Friendly Canaan Valley Resort, Davis, WV

Jun 17, 2025 | Life, Travel

Happy Wednesday, everyone!  I wrote this from Canaan Valley Resort in Davis, WV, in a cabin in the Appalachian Mountains.  The weather was gorgeous, with a warm 75 degrees, but it felt cooler in the cabin due to the surrounding trees.  The windows and front screen door were open, and the cross breeze felt wonderful.  The cabins and cottages are fully furnished and allow dogs, but do NOT have air conditioning.  I was a bit worried going into the trip because I’m not one to rough it, but it turned out to be one of my favorite trips.  The woods felt peaceful, the birds were singing, and I watched the deer from our porch as they played and ran through the woods.

Mr. TAL gave a presentation at the resort, and since the cabins allow dogs, we decided to go with him.  Canaan Valley Resort is only 3 hours from us by car, and the drive was beautiful.  We drove through Deep Creek, MD, and will probably take a mini-vacation there soon.  It was just so pretty.  Mr. TAL and I have taken many vacations, but have yet to take a beach or lake vacation.  If you read my blog, you know that I love visiting Tennessee, so we tend to go there most often.  It seems that everyone I talk to is planning a trip.  Where are you going this summer/year?  Comment below and let me know.  I would love to hear about everyone’s plans and if there are any dog-friendly destinations.  You can also email me at twoadorablelabs@gmail.com.  I receive many emails with suggestions and questions.

Maggie sat in front of the screen door most of the time, and Jake liked lying on the bed.  I’ve taken lots of pictures and will try to post the best ones.  The lighting in the cabin was not great, so the photos may appear dark, especially since I took some at night.

We booked Cabin #8, a two-bedroom, one bath cabin with a living room, fireplace, front porch, and a fully stocked kitchen.  The ceilings were vaulted, which made the space feel larger, and the couches were comfortable.  The main bedroom had a double bed, and the second bedroom had two twin beds.  None of them were very comfortable, although I did bring my own pillow, which helped.  The living room had a ceiling fan, and there was no shortage of clean towels :-).  And most importantly, it was very clean!
Speaking of taking photos, I recently bought a book called Dog Photogruffy by David. G. Kindervater, a quick-start guide on how to take better photos of your pup.  The book can be purchased on Amazon, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit Joey’s P.A.W.. This nonprofit organization raises money for animals in need of wheelchairs and prosthetics.  David is a fantastic photographer whom I have met, and his Instagram handle is @thedgk.  Joey’s P.A.W. is the whole reason I wrote my Sit, Stay, Eat cookbooks.  I wanted to help raise money for these sweet animals, and my cookbooks can be purchased via my storefront and BookBaby.com.

Dog Friendly Thomas and Davis, WV

I searched a number of websites before coming to the resort, and the closest towns we visited were Deep Creek, MD, Thomas, WV and Davis, WV.   I was looking for dog-friendly restaurants to take Jake and Maggie to for dinner.  I also wanted to know about dog-friendly activities nearby.  There are so many parks and trails to enjoy with your pup.  These areas give off a small town feel, beautiful scenery, and many parks, waterfalls, trails, hunting, fishing, skiing, and water sports, along with areas and activities to enjoy with your pet.

I found a great article called A Local’s Guide:  Davis and Thomas, WV – https://alexandriastylebook.com/alexandria-stylebook/katelin-moomau-guide-to-thomas-and-davis-west-virginia

I called the Purple Fiddle in Thomas, WV, and they do allow dogs.  The doggie entrance is separate from the restaurant, and it features a doggie door that leads onto their outdoor patio, which the dogs must use.  Keep in mind that if you are traveling alone with your pup, you would have to let your pet go through the door and then enter the restaurant, leaving your pet unattended.  We decided against eating there but found a great restaurant in Deep Creek called UNO’s Pizzeria and Grill that allows dogs on their outdoor patio, and a restaurant in Davis called Mama Mia Pie and Pasta that does not.  We took the dogs, picked up our order, and returned to the cabin to have dinner.  We got burgers and fries from Uno’s and pasta, meatballs, fettuccine Alfredo, and garlic bread from Mama Mia’s, and both meals were delicious.  I also stopped into Mary Lou’s Gourmet Apple Company and bought 4 Apple Pie, Snickers, Health, and Milk Chocolate covered apples, and wow, were they delicious.  My favorite was the Apple Pie.  And to my delight, they allow dogs!!!  I walked through the little town while Mr. TAL stayed with the dogs, as they were sleeping and exhausted from our cabin adventure.

Whenever we plan a trip with the dogs, I always create a checklist of what I need to bring for them. Honestly, I should buy them their own suitcase, because it’s always a ton of stuff, including their medicines, food, treats, beds, and more.  I always make sure they have their flea/tick and heartworm prevention taken care of, especially when going to a cabin in the mountains!  They typically get their toenails cut, a bath, and a new bow for their trip 🙂

I must say that this little trip was very relaxing.  The peace and tranquility of the mountains, the sounds of nature, and my favorite time of all…the mornings… were very special.  I would make us coffee in the morning, and we would sit on the porch with the dogs, listening to the birds sing.  I enjoyed waking up with them and how the forest came to life each day.  I made us breakfast, took Mr. TAL to his meeting, and then it was back to the cabin for a walk with the pups and journaling for me.  They loved all the new smells and wagged their tails in sync as they walked around the paved circular road in front of our cabin.  Check out more here on Davis and Thomas listed as two of the coolest small towns in WV!  https://bestofcanaan.com/welcome-to-the-small-towns-wv/
