How Color Can Transform A Room

Apr 12, 2022 | Interior Design, Maggie Lane Designs

Happy Wednesday everyone!  Today I’m talking about how color can transform a room.  When we moved into our house, I had the dining room painted the same color as the baseboards which is an off white.  After a while, I couldn’t stand it but wasn’t sure what direction I wanted to go.  Did I want bold, bright?  Did I want sage green, pale yellow, or did I want shades of salmon?  Our dining room sat for almost a year a plain off white while I worked on other projects but I admit I would stand at the doorway and contemplate how it would look painted anything other than what it was.  Then it hit me!  I pulled a napkin, plate, and curtain panel and with my Sherwin Williams swatch booklet in hand, I made the decision to go bold with a color called Chili Pepper!  Look how this color transformed our dining room!

This dining room is the reason I started my “Revive and Refresh” package.  How many of you often wonder what color to choose, how to make the final decision, and are in need of a room revive and refresh?  Sherwin Williams paint is my favorite which is one of the product suggestions I give in this package.  It’s so important to have a budget in mind and a gallon of paint can sometimes be the cheapest route.  I worked with the accessories I had considering I had all that I needed to create this room.  I admit that I’m not one for a grey/white/cream home.  I love color.  Color makes me happy.  I typically go for a lighter wall but in this case, Chili Pepper was the top pick!  Read more to find out where I bought everything!  Pictures and a video below!

These napkins are a combination of three different sets and a single stem silk flower.  The cloth napkin in the floral pattern was bought at Home Goods while the solid cloth napkins in salmon and cream were bought at Pier 1 several years ago.  I found the silk flowers at Hobby Lobby.  I cut the stems shorter and then wrapped them around the napkin.

I liked how the colors matched and the beading around the napkins played well with the brushed gold in the floral napkins.

I knew in my mind I wanted accents of leopard and these flowers gave a subtle touch to the table.

These dishes were the jumping off point for the look of the dining room.  I found them at Three French Hens in Wildwood, MO.  There were 6 plates all with a different bird and design.  The placemats were a soft touch to the plate and found at Three French Hens as well.  I added a plain gold charger plate to break up all of the pattern from Home Goods.

The idea for curtains came much later after I put the table together.  I wanted a very formal but comfortable dining room and the large window just felt harsh.  Although it is trimmed out in decorative molding, I felt a nice soft curtain would complement the room.  These curtains were found at Touch Of Class online and brought all the colors together.

With all of the pattern in the room, I wanted something that would be neutral and solid.  I like how the light bounces off this mirror making the room feel bigger and the brushed gold picks up the beads on the table napkins.  I found this mirror on HOUZZ but I have to admit it is hard to clean because the mirror sits behind the pointed Roth iron.

Jake and Maggie are always with me no matter what I’m doing…especially when it comes to house projects.  They are always curious at first and then like to lay down and watch.  They trip me up sometimes but I wouldn’t want it any other way!

And this is the after!  I took pictures and videos at different times of the day and with the chandelier on and off to show you how the paint looks in different lighting.  I tried pairing lighter and darker colors around the room giving it a nice balance.

Our dining room set came from Ethan Allen which was the most expensive of the whole room.  I chose the rug from At Home and was very pleased with the quality.

The dining room chair cushions were custom designed with a cream background and sage green diamond pattern.  I wanted something neutral in case I wanted to change my decor in the future.

The floral arrangements flanking each side of the china cabinet were custom designed from Three French Hens.

The pictures were bought from Kirklands and the stools came from The Berlin Gift Barn in Sugarcreek, OH.

The shelves under the pictures are from Hobby Lobby.

The miscellaneous items on each shelf were from trips to Three French Hens, Home Goods, and Gabrielle Brothers.

The four candle sticks came from Three French Hens.  They are unique because they hold a tapered candle, as well as, a thicker shorter candle depending on the look you are going for.

The floral arrangement was made by me with flowers and bowl from Hobby Lobby.  I have since added flowers in a leopard print and solids in the color of the wall.

The curtains have been tied back to allow more light to come through.

I add the picture on the far right saved from two houses ago and bought at Kirklands.  Originally there were two but one broke when we moved into this house.

You might not want this much on your table and would prefer to keep it simple.  The sky is the limit to decorating tables and creating tablescapes!  Have fun with it and change it up as you like!  Who knows. I  might do some rearranging one day :-). Or you might be looking to downsize on your overall room decor. Either way, make your home something you are proud of and is what makes you happy.  Shop other rooms by moving things around.  Being creative is what I love about interior design.

Thank you so much. I had to consider the other room colors as well which was a bit difficult. But I love the end result and how it all flows. Now on to painting the entry way into the kitchen (the same color as the kitchen is now).
