How To Create A Casual Holiday Table

Dec 20, 2019 | Maggie Lane Designs, Tablescapes

Who is finished wrapping and decorating for Christmas???  I am!!!!!!  You know I love tablescapes so I decided to put two different looks together this year.  These are the pictures of our kitchen table of a more casual look which I’m so excited to show you.  I will blog about our dining room table with a formal look on Saturday.
I bought these Pioneer Woman Holiday dishes at Walmart two years ago.  This year I found the table runner, red wine glasses, and snowmen at Home Goods and the sugar/crystal covered fruit arrangement at Hobby Lobby for 50% off.

I love all Christmas decor but my favorite is the traditional red and white.  I also love a dramatic centerpiece on a table but I don’t want my guests having to look around that to see me and vice versa!  So I keep my table decor on the down low :-).  Here are some suggestions for creating low centerpieces but still giving a dramatic look.

Tips on creating a casual holiday table:

Greenery – Lay a wispy length of pine as a green runner on your table.
Ornaments – Place special ornaments or treasures where you can see them and mesh into the green runner.  Or put ornaments in a bowl with a string of dainty battery operated lights to give a sparkle effect.
Candles – Place small votive candles in decorative glass globes on your table to give a warm glow.  Or surround a larger candle with cranberries and greenery for a more rustic look. Just make sure it is not in anyones way.
Layer – The key to any decor is placement and layering.  Adding dimension and using different textures to create a festive look.  Start with your biggest item and work down from there making sure you have room for dishes, napkins, silverware, and room for everyone to eat.
Serving Dishes – Setting up a side table or kitchen counter full of matching or even mis-matched serving bowls and serving utensils to compliment your table is a creative way to use your holiday dishes without crowding the main table.  Mix in candles, greenery, ornaments, and berries to create a warm and festive look.
Use Food As Your Centerpiece – Make a meat and cheese tray and give it height by using different size bowls and dishes to add in jams, jellies, nuts, olives, etc.  Use your favorite dish or a fun festive tray or even add some herbs to give it more color.  Place in the middle of the table for everyone to enjoy!

More ideas for a fun casual holiday table:

Fill the table with food!!!  Set up some plates on a different counter, have your guests grab a plate, sit down and dig in!  It’s that simple.  Make sure you’ve got enough napkins, silverware, and drinking cups and you can relax and enjoy the night!

Make a date for a “night of appetizers”.  You can keep it simple or go crazy.  Sky is the limit with appetizers.
