Doggie Pumpkin Cookies

Happy Wednesday everyone!  It’s November 2nd and what better way to kick off November than with these Doggie Pumpkin Cookies. Shaped in a ghost, bat, bone, and flower disk, these puffed up cookies are lab approved.  The dough is rolled out to approximately 1/4 inch thick, baked in the oven for 18 minutes and comes out slightly puffy in the middle and crunchy on the ends.  Made with healthy dog approved ingredients, these treats were a hit especially with Maggie who never left my side while I baked dog treats all day.
This recipe is so simple to make.  All I did was combine the eggs, whole wheat flour, cinnamon, pumpkin puree, and hot water together.  Using a Scott towel, I wiped a light layer of coconut oil over a cookie sheet, rolled out my dough, cut the cookies, placed them on my baking sheet and baked them for 18 minutes for 375 degrees.  I waited for them to cool and gave Jake And Maggie each a cookie.  
I found these fun cookie cutters at the Dollar General but you can use any cutter of your choosing.  I think a fall leaf pattern would be perfect for these cookies.  This recipe is a fun way to celebrate your pet’s birthday, have their fur friends over for a party, or give as a gift for any dog lover.

Is Pumpkin Puree safe for dogs?

Pumpkin puree can be labeled as 100% pure pumpkin, pumpkin puree, solid pack pumpkin, or simply “pumpkin.” Regardless of what it’s called, one thing pumpkin puree won’t contain is any sort of seasonings or sugar—it’s just cooked and mashed squash.

Pumpkin is safe for dogs and can help alleviate diarrhea and constipation.  Note that you should NEVER use canned pumpkin pie, as it may contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs.

Today was a great day to bake.  Jake And Maggie helped me make doggie pancakes and doggie brittle which I will post later.  This recipe made 38 cookies that can be frozen for later.  Other ingredient options would be to add banana and 4 ounces (1/2 cup) of chopped beef heart. Honestly, I had to leave the beef heart out as I just couldn’t make the purchase, take it home and chop it up.  Chopped beef is very good for dogs but I’m staying with pumpkin and wheat flour for now.

Ingredients

  • 2 eggs
  • 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup hot water
  • 1 cup pumpkin puree

Instructions

  • Preheatoven to 375 degrees
  • Lightly coat cookie sheet with coconut oil. I used a Scott towel to do so. You could use nonstick cooking spray or line it with parchment paper as well.
  • In a large bowl, beat eggs and combine flour, pumpkin puree, cinnamon, and hot water. Fold all ingredients together.
  • Add flour to counter and roll out your dough to about 1/4 inch thick. Some of these cookies are thicker than others.
  • Use cookie cutters to cut out dough. Or take a spoonful and drop onto cookie sheet. Whichever your prefer.
  • Bake at 375 for approximately 15 to 20 minutes depending on your oven. Mine took 18 minutes.
  • Let cook and serve!
  • Store in refrigerator in air tight container for up to 3 days or freeze.
