Can Dogs Eat Yogurt?

Jun 7, 2026 | Pet Health, Pets

Happy Wednesday, everyone!  We’ve had a very busy summer so far.  We launched The Dimpled Bean, our online store, and collaborated with Puppy Paws Coffee to create Jake’s Coffee.  We had dog bows made that are the cutest coffee bean pattern.  We collaborated with Allegheny City Brewing and are planning a fundraiser to support canine cancer research!  In my last post, I talked about our two foster dogs, Chase and Bo, and guess what?  We adopted them!  Yes, we are foster fails, and that’s ok :-).  We are totally in love with them.  We had a birthday party for Maggie and a Gotcha Day party for Bo and Chase!  Maggie is 9 on Monday, Bo is almost 13, and Chase is almost 16.  We got all of our yard work done, fresh mulch, new trees, and landscape lighting.  Now we can sit back and enjoy some downtime.  We are currently sitting on our porch, with Mr. TAL at his computer in his lap, working on codes and standards, while I write this blog post.  We are all enjoying a gorgeous day with a slight breeze, and all three dogs are sleeping.

Can Dogs Eat Greek Yogurt?

Yes, dogs can eat plain Greek yogurt in moderation. In fact, Greek yogurt can offer some beneficial nutrients like protein, calcium, and probiotics that may support your dog’s health.

But here’s the key: not all Greek yogurt is created equal.

Some varieties contain:

  • Added sugars
  • Artificial sweeteners
  • Flavorings
  • High fat content
The Safest Option?

Plain, unsweetened Greek yogurt with minimal ingredients.

When served correctly, Greek yogurt can be:

  • A nutritious treat
  • A meal topper
  • An addition to your mental enrichment toys

Still, it’s important to understand both the benefits and the risks before adding it to your dog’s routine.

Health Benefits of Greek Yogurt For Dogs

Greek yogurt isn’t just tasty; it can offer several nutritional benefits when served in moderation.

1. Probiotics for Digestive Health

One of the biggest advantages of Greek yogurt is its probiotic content.

Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that support:

Healthy digestion
Gut balance
Nutrient absorption
Immune function

A healthy gut plays a major role in your dog’s overall well-being. Dogs with balanced gut bacteria may experience:

Fewer digestive issues
Better stool quality
Improved immune support
Reduced gas and bloating

Not all Greek yogurt contains active probiotics. Look for labels that say:

“Live and active cultures”
“Contains probiotics”
This ensures your dog actually receives the digestive benefits.

2. High-Quality Protein
Greek yogurt is higher in protein than regular yogurt, which makes it especially appealing as a dog treat.
Protein supports:
Muscle development
Tissue repair
Healthy skin and coat
Energy levels
3. Calcium for Strong Bones
Greek yogurt contains calcium, which supports:
Strong bones
Healthy teeth
Muscle function
Nerve function
Growing puppies and senior dogs especially benefit from calcium, but too much calcium can also cause imbalances.

4. Supports Immune Health

A healthy immune system helps dogs:

Fight illness
Recover faster
Maintain energy
Stay healthy long-term

Chase and Bo's new stroller

I bought this stroller on Chewy. com and it’s perfect for the two of them.  When Maggie needs it, it will fit her as well.

Risks of Greek Yogurt for Dogs

While Greek yogurt can be healthy, there are some potential risks to keep in mind.

1. Lactose Intolerance

Symptoms may include:

Gas
Diarrhea
Loose stools
Stomach discomfort
Vomiting
The good news?

Greek yogurt contains less lactose than regular yogurt, making it easier for some dogs to tolerate.

Start with a small amount
Monitor your dog’s reaction
Discontinue if digestive upset occurs

2. Added Sugars and Artificial Sweeteners

Flavored Greek yogurts often contain:

Sugar
Artificial sweeteners
Flavorings
Some sweeteners, like xylitol, are extremely toxic to dogs and should always be avoided.

Always check the ingredient label carefully before offering Greek yogurt to your dog.

Stick with plain, unsweetened Greek yogurt only.

Full-fat Greek yogurt contains more calories and fat, which may contribute to:

Weight gain
Digestive upset
Pancreatitis (especially in sensitive dogs)
Low-fat or non-fat Greek yogurt is often the safer choice for most dogs.

How Much Greek Yogurt Can Dogs Eat?

Greek yogurt should be served in moderation as an occasional treat.

Here’s a general guideline:

Small dogs: 1–2 teaspoons
Medium dogs: 1–2 tablespoons
Large dogs: 2–3 tablespoons
Start small and see how your dog responds before offering more.

Remember: treats (including Greek yogurt) should make up no more than 10% of your dog’s daily calories.

What Type of Greek Yogurt Is Best for Dogs?

When choosing Greek yogurt for your dog, look for:

Plain
Unsweetened
No artificial sweeteners
No added sugars
Live and active cultures
Low-fat or non-fat (optional but often ideal)

Avoid:

Flavored yogurts
Yogurt with fruit added
Yogurt with artificial sweeteners
Yogurt with chocolate or toppings

The simpler the ingredient list, the better.

A great way to introduce yogurt to your dog is to roll a blueberry in yogurt and freeze them.  Another option would be to hollow out a strawberry and fill it with yogurt.  Frozen or not, they make for a delicious and healthy treat!

How much Greek yogurt is safe to give your puppy?

A puppy can safely have a small amount of plain, unsweetened Greek yogurt.  A good general rule is to offer 1/4 teaspoon for toy breeds, 1/2 to 1 teaspoon for small dogs, and 1 to 2 tablespoons for medium to large puppies.  Treats should never exceed
10% of their daily calorie intake.
