Santas, Poinsettias, Cranberry Bourbon Sours Table

Dec 12, 2023 | Christmas, Drinks, Food, Maggie Lane Designs, Tablescapes

Happy Wednesday everyone!  My new Santas, Poinsettias, Cranberry Bourbon Sours Table gives big Christmas vibes!  I added a festive addition with this Cranberry Bourbon Sours drink with a sweet and sour combo of homemade cranberry-orange syrup, warming bourbon, fresh citrus, maple syrup, and sweet candied rosemary.  My goal with this table was to provide enough glasses for drinks and enough dishes for the meal and appetizers.  Food and drinks will be appropriately placed for everyone to reach in hand painted poinsettia glasses and appetizer trays made by Mudpie I found years ago at Home Goods.

I wanted to add my TAL signature candle scent Creme Brûlée to the table along with different Christmas votives from Walmart.  I think my red candle labels look perfect on this table and the bright cranberry red of the cranberries looks so festive.  I took photos at different times of the day but love how the table looks at night when all the tea light candles are burning.

The reviews are mixed on this Cranberry Bourbon Sours drink…well, there are only two of them…Mr. TAL and myself.  Mr. TAL loved it while I did not.  It seems I’m not a bourbon fan but I loved the homemade cranberry orange syrup and loved how the candied rosemary added a nice touch to the drink.  It’s so simple to make and a perfect addition especially for this time of the year.  Just grab some fresh rosemary sprigs, dampen them with water, and cover in granulated sugar. Let the rosemary dry for an hour at room temperature. Now you have pretty, glistening rosemary that’s the perfect final touch to this bourbon sour.  This recipe makes 6 drinks but we made 4 and then kept the syrup for a potpourri because it smelled that good!  I’ll provide my recipe for that in the next few weeks.

I first found this recipe at Half Baked Harvest and wanted to change it up a bit but at the last minute decided to make it verbatim.  So Mr. TAL headed to the store to get all of the ingredients and I set the table.  We made this together and enjoyed another night of painting.

Jake and Maggie watched patiently while we buzzed around the kitchen and then made their way under our feet while we painted.  The house is decorated with our two trees, the mantel is decorated to match, and we are getting ready for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.  Homemade crab cakes will be served Christmas Eve aside Mr. TAL’s famous homemade fettuccine noodles (I’ll be making the homemade fettuccine sauce).  We will serve baked fish and vegetables on Christmas Day in the dining room with Mr. TAL’s homemade bread and of course, we will have all the sides and desserts!  I hope you enjoyed his post!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup maple syrup
  • 2 cups fresh cranberries
  • 1 large orange zest
  • 8 oz bourbon
  • 4 oz lemon juice
  • 1 cup 100% cranberry juice
  • 3-4 dash orange bitters
  • 1 blood orange or regular orange for garnish
  • 1 pack rosemary for garnish
  • sugar to roll rosemary in

Instructions

  • To make the cranberry syrup: In a medium pot, bring 1/2 cup water, the maple syrup, and cranberries to a boil over high heat. Boil 5 minutes or until the cranberries begin to burst, then remove from the heat. Stir in the orange zest. If you syrup thickens too quickly, just add additional water to thin. Let cool. If desired, strain out the cranberries.
  • In a punch bowl, combine the cranberry syrup, bourbon, lemon juice, cranberry juice, and orange bitters. Stir to combine, chill until ready to serve. Serve over ice. Garnish with an orange slice and candied rosemary (recipe below), if desired.
  • CANDIED ROSEMARY
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Gently run rosemary sprigs under a little water to dampen and place onto the prepared baking sheet. Sprinkle the rosemary with granulated sugar on all sides, making sure the rosemary is thoroughly coated in sugar. Allow to dry on the baking sheet for 1 hour. The rosemary can be made 1 day in advance and stored at room temperature.
