Basement Bathroom Revive And Refresh

Mar 7, 2022 | Interior Design, Maggie Lane Designs

Happy Monday everyone!  I’m so excited to reveal my Basement Bathroom Revive And Refresh project on the blog today.  Mr. TAL and I have worked together over the last several months to update our basement making it a space that we can enjoy together.  This bathroom was a plain Jane, standard builder grade bathroom that needed to blend better with the rest of the basement.  I was a bit nervous picking such a dark color in a room this small but wanted to pick up the red in our area rug in the main part of the room.  I also loved how the 2nd Amendment picture matched perfectly and with all of the white and cream in this half bath, everything just popped.  This one little picture was the jumping off point for the color of this bathroom.  I took the mirror, towel rack, and toilet paper holder off the walls and got to work!

This room needed a Revive And Refresh and between trips to Sherwin Williams, Home Goods, and Hobby Lobby, I was able to get the look I wanted.  Last year I came up with a design idea to help customers with their color inspiration, as well as, suggesting ideas for refreshing their rooms!  I worked with my design team at Upframe Creative who helped me make it come to fruition.  Now available on my storefront:

1st Coat

This paint said 1 coat was all that was needed.  Because I used the wrong roller on the first coat, I needed three coats.  This is a darker color and most of the time, darker colors need more coats.

The most important step in painting is the prep work.  Because I have spent many years painting our different houses, I no longer use painter’s tape but if you feel you need it, start with a huge roll of blue painters tape.  I keep my supplies minimal with 1 small foam roller and paint tray (the multi packs are the best) for small areas, 1 large roller for drywall and paint tray for large areas, 2 inch angled brush for cutting in, wooden paint stirrer, can opener, and a roll of Scott towels.  Apartment Therapy has a great website with a thorough checklist of painting supplies for beginners.  Sherwin Williams is my go to paint.  I love the colors, the consistency of the paint, and application and drying time is minimal.  And if you walk into my closet, you will see a section of clothing designated solely for painting (yes, I do look like I own my own painting company!)

Keep in mind that using the appropriate supplies makes for an easier painting project.  You will see that my first coat of paint did not turn out as planned.  The coverage was terrible because I used a small foam roller instead of a large roller made for painting drywall.  This bathroom took 3 coats because I tried to use the supplies I had.  I hope you enjoyed my half bath update and would love to hear your comments.  If you have a room that needs updating, I would love to know more!  I have several posts coming soon with updates to my home along with a project I helped a friend with.  She needed help with her living and dining room and her “Revive And Refresh Package” turned out perfect.
One more thing….invest in different size ladders.  They really come in handy especially when you are short like me!

Lights On!

This bathroom sits in the middle of the basement and does not get natural light.  I considered this when choosing my paint color.  If you are not sure of yourself and the color, an option would be to buy paint samples which are about $3.00 at Lowe’s.  I went to the Dollar Store, bought sheets of poster board, cut them into squares, painted the squares, and then hung them on all four walls to help me decide.  Sometimes the paint swatches you initially get are so small plus lighting can change a color in an instant. We have one flush mount light on the ceiling in this bathroom.

I love the way this turned out. Some people worry a dark color will make a room look smaller but that is not always the case! Absolutely beautiful ????

Wow Bobbi Jo it beautiful! You are really a good painter and you didn’t use painters tape..That color reminds me of my bedroom in my little house on Orpha Ave. I like a bold color and with the accessories you choose it all works really well. You definitely have a designers knack. Looking forward to your next project..????????❤️
