How I Decorated My Porch

Jun 12, 2022 | Interior Design, Maggie Lane Designs

Happy Monday everyone!  Me and the dogs have been working so hard this spring and summer on our porch and patio and are so proud of what we have accomplished.  Today on the blog is How I Decorated My Porch!  We (Mr. TAL and I) added some new outdoor curtains and a fire pit along with bright pink pillows!  With pit stops at Home Goods, Walmart, Lowe’s, and an online order at Amazon.com, we made it happen!

Jake And Maggie are loving the porch.  They find their spots and look out over the yard watching the wildlife  Yesterday we saw deer and a turkey!  We also have a family of Finches enjoying our bird baths!  Yes, I’m out every night filling them up making sure they have fresh water to take their baths and get a drink 🙂

Each year I try something different whether it be real plants vs. fake, a new color scheme, or rearranging the furniture.  I stopped into Big Lots when they were having their 50% off sale on outdoor furniture and found everything I needed to complete my look.  With new pink pillows from Home Goods, spray paint in pink by Rustoleum from Lowe’s, and fake greenery, I was able to give the porch a fresh look.  Check out my roosters I found in Missouri and had been sitting on our porch for a few summers.  I wanted pink accents so instead of replacing them, I just spray painted them pink!  I also painted my plant stand in the corner pink as well.  This stand was bought over 10 years ago at Big Lots for $5 and has since been painted black, white, and now pink.

Fake cactus and wooden tray from Big Lots

These colors were the jumping off point for my porch this year.  I always start with a color in mind and something that I like whether it is a picture, bowl, flower, etc and go from there.  This year it was this cactus.  I carried these same colors around the porch and tied them all in with my pineapple pillows from Home Goods.  The sparkle rhinestones in the pillow tie in well with the gold fire glass on the fire pit!  The wine glass is from the Dollar General and I filled it with Peach Moscato!  Doesn’t it pair well with my decor 🙂

I decided to carry the same color scheme out to our patio with the pink, black, grey, and white.  I found these pillows at Home Goods and although they are slightly more peachy in color, I think they brighten up the space.  I also decided to plant hostas and shrubs in my pots instead of the flowers I normally plant (see last year’s patio HERE and HERE).  We purchased this heater from Walmart for the chilly nights and it works really well.  We got it on sale for $100 and were very impressed with how sturdy it is.

Mr. TAL putting up my curtains for me!  I found these Sun Zero Valencia Cabana curtains at Walmart and love them.  They even come with tie backs in a silver and gold rope design.  We bought white rods and closet rod flange sets at Lowe’s to hang the curtains.  They come 2 in a pack and the order number is #0474251 if you are interested.  Polls are metal and can be cut to size with a reciprocating saw.

If you are like me, the mosquitos love you!  I purchased these bucket citronella candles in different colors to place on the porch and our patio to keep them away.  Did you know that Lemon Grass keeps the mosquitos away!  It mounds up like decorative grass and the bugs hate it :-). Known for its distinct smell, citronella grass (or lemon grass) is the most commonly used natural ingredient in mosquito repellants. In fact, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden recommends lemon-scented plants such as citronella grass to keep mosquitoes at bay.  I had it along our deck in Missouri and we enjoyed nights out on the deck without being bit up!

We have had a wicker table in the middle of our porch for a few years now which is nice because it also stores all of our pillows.  We bought our outdoor sets at K-Mart, Big Lots, and Lowes but this year we decided to purchase our patio heater and a fire pit for the middle of the porch to replace the wicker table.  Best decision we ever made!  It matches perfectly with the color and style of our furniture and fits perfectly.  The black glass top is beautiful but word of advice…it shows pollens and dirt more so than a top that is made of tile.  What is nice about it as it acts as a table when not in use.  It came with lava rock but I love the broken glass so we placed an order on Amazon and within two days we had beautiful gold glass shimmering in the fire.

Jake relaxing by the patio!

This is Jake’s normal.  He loves to lay on the patio and watch everything that is going one.  While Maggie runs like a bullet around the yard, Jake enjoys his relaxation time :-).

I hope you enjoyed our little tour of our porch and patio.  I few years ago I chose a neutral color palette and love that I can add pops of color each year with pillows and accessories.  Who knows what I’ll do next year but we are thoroughly enjoying our evenings on the porch and weekends on the patio.  We have two grills going, have been cooking out a lot and enjoying the summer!

And remember, with a little spray paint, you can give your outdoor items a fresh clean look and keep them another year!  Move older items around and incorporate new for a brand new look!

Thank you!! Yes, I’m so glad I chose the gold glass. There were many colors available on Amazon but I felt that color would better flow with anything I chose to change out there.

Thank you. I think I’ll keep the pink for next year to! Now I just have to post my front door. I put pink in my wreath so that the whole house flows together as you walk around it! Every color in my wreath brings out all the flowers I have planted on the side and in back!
