Happy “Friday Treats Friday”!  When I was writing Monday’s post “Can Dog’s Eat Honey? (HERE), I was thinking I would create an apple pie recipe similar to the one (HERE) only loaded with apples but decided to put a twist on it.  And the winner is…. Puppy Apple Crisp!  Yeahhh!!!  Jake and Maggie are at my feet right now as I type this post and the kitchen smells like cinnamon!  Can dogs eat Cinnamon?  Yes they can!  And…it is non-toxic to cats and horses as well!  This recipe is full of all natural, healthy ingredients and packed with applies, oats, honey, wheat flour, water, and lightly sprinkled with cinnamon.

How much is too much cinnamon? The Pet Poison Helpline states that it takes more than one teaspoon of powder to cause problems for most pets, although essential oils can cause problems in lower dosages, and small breed dogs may be sensitive to smaller amounts of cinnamon than large breeds. The helpline also warns that a large cinnamon overdose can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, changes in heart rate, low blood sugar, and liver disease.

The benefits of giving your dog cinnamon:

Helps with arthritis
Acts as an anti-inflammatory agent reducing swelling and joint problems
Can help with brain and cognitive issues
Help to reduce obesity in overweight dogs   
Improves heart health – In a study published in the Journal of Animal and Veterinary Advances, researchers found that dogs who eat cinnamon also had improved heart health. Dogs that participated in the study who were given cinnamon displayed significantly lower systolic blood pressure and heart rate than dogs in the group that were not given cinnamon.

Negative reactions to Cinnamon:

Beware, if your dog is pregnant, DO NOT give her cinnamon which can cause a stimulating effect on the uterus.
Do not give your pet a cinnamon stick
Cinnamon is non-toxic but nutmeg is toxic

Ingredients

  • 1 large honeycrisp apple
  • 1/4 cup oats
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 1 tsp wheat flour
  • 1 tsp water
  • sprinkle of cinnamon

Instructions

  • Use a small cast iron skillet
  • Slice apples and layer in skillet
  • Mix in a small bowl the oats, honey, wheat flour, and water
  • Layer apples with oat mixture and lightly sprinkle with cinnamon
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes

    My dogs enjoy apple slices with peanut butter. Not only is it a healthy and delicious snack, the granular texture of the apples is good for their teeth!
