Air Quality & Pets: How To Stop Your Home From Getting Musty & Smelly

Oct 10, 2025 | Tips and Tricks

As absolutely amazing as a pet is, you can’t deny that they may give your home a certain odor. You know what we’re talking about; there’s a mustiness that comes with having a pet, which can make the quality of the air feel almost thick and a bit harder to breathe in. That’s because of pet dander, which are teeny tiny flakes of dead skin from animals with fur. They linger on your pets but also rub off onto furniture – where they become airborne.

That’s where the problem sets in as airborne pet dander triggers allergy symptoms and messes with the general air quality in your home. You categorically cannot get rid of your pet, so here are some ideas to stop your home from getting musty, smelly, and full of pet dander.

Install an HVAC system with an air purifier

While this might seem like a big investment, it’s comfortably the best thing you can do to deal with pet dander and that musty dog smell. Contact a reputable HVAC installation company to install a comprehensive system that includes air ducts and built-in ventilation. Ideally, you want an HVAC unit that includes an air purifier to filter out pet dander further and make your home more breathable.

Additionally, if you already have an HVAC system without an air purifier, your task is significantly simplified. All you have to do is get someone to install a separate purification device, and you’re done!

Keep up with regular dog grooming

Of course, please just turn your attention to the little rascals themselves. Regular pet grooming will prevent dander buildup and reduce shedding. Give your pets a brush outside to remove any loose fur and dander – this prevents them from bringing dander inside and worsening your air quality.

Likewise, be sure you bathe your pets every couple of weeks. This is really helpful for managing the classic pet smell (also, clean anything they lie/sleep on once a week) and improves their skin health to prevent dander. That being said, you really don’t want to clean your pet too often. They don’t need a weekly bath because it will only make their skin drier and increase pet dander. Once a month usually is okay.

Just like that you’ve got a cleaner home that smells nice and doesn’t feel musty. You’re breathing in much fresher air while enjoying the company of your furry best friend.
