Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes

May 11, 2021 | Food, Main Course

Happy Wednesday everyone!!!  Today it’s all about my crab cake recipe.  Layers of seasonings, bread crumbs, and jumbo lump crab meat cooked in a garlic butter sauce!  Taken from page 61 of my cookbook, Sit, Stay, Eat, I’m sharing this recipe with you.  Incredibly easy to make, these crab cakes are so filling.  Dip into tartar sauce, shrimp sauce, or make as a burger in between two toasted buns and you’ve got yourself a delicious meal!  All you need is a bowl, a cast iron skillet, your favorite spatula, and don’t forget your grocery list for your trip to Kroger!  Yep, that is where I get my crabmeat :-).

I’ve been making this recipe for years now and have baked, fried, broiled, and even cooked these crab cakes on our grill!  Serve with a side of asparagus, rice, or cowboy potatoes (also in my cookbook)!  Page 61 has a surprise homemade tartar sauce recipe but you gotta buy the book to find that out :-).

These little cakes can be great for any party.  I make mine about the size of my hand but they can be formed into smaller patties for a fun appetizer.  A little tip:  I personally think that using and purchasing high quality jumbo lump meat tastes the best.  I’ve used the claw crab meat before and didn’t like it as much.  The crab cake was to shredded for me and the jumbo lump meat gives a beefier patty which I like.  The bread crumbs and bread pieces hold the patty together so if you find that your crab cakes are falling apart, just add in a bit more bread pieces and you should be fine.

These photos (below) were taken when I made them and combined both jumbo lump and claw meat together.  You will see that they look more shredded than when I used just the jump lump meat.  If you prefer both meats, don’t be afraid to combine them into one crab cake.  Also, if you like more heat, add more hot pepper flakes.  Make these to your liking!  I would love to hear if you tried them and how they turned out!

  • 4 tbsp Hellman's Mayonnaise
  • 1 tsp dijon mustard
  • 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Old bay seasoning
  • 1/4 tsp garlic salt
  • 2 tbsp finely chopped parsley
  • 1 cup Italian bread crumbs

  • Fold in crab meat until all is mixed well
  • Form medium sized crab cake patties approximately 1 inch thick
  • Melt butter and garlic powder and set aside
  • Bake crab cakes at 350 degrees for 40 minutes or until top gets crispy but not burnt
  • Baste crab cakes with garlic butter as they cook

Notes

This recipe should make 5-6 crab cakes.
Make sure you do not break up all the crab meat lumps.
The top 3 pictures show crab cakes made in a cast iron skillet.
If you want to fry your crab cakes, heat up garlic and butter in a cast iron skillet and cook the crab cakes on both sids until they look like they are getting crispy.
The last two pictures show they were baked in the oven which is what this recipe calls for.
