Soy Wax Vs. Beeswax

Mar 27, 2022 | DIY, Maggie Lane Designs

Happy Monday everyone!  Two Adorable Labs has collaborated with Sweet Home Vanilla to bring you the ins and outs of burning soy wax vs beeswax candles.  I met Amanda Vos, Owner of Sweet Home Vanilla, last year and feel in love with her product.  So much so, that I did a post (HERE) on making her vanilla and added it to my Holiday Gift Ideas 2021 post.  We decided to collaborate talking about recipes using vanilla (coming soon), cleaning tips using vanilla (coming soon), and our experiences with beeswax and soy wax (below).  Check out my post below on two small businesses who turned their love for making candles into a business.
Collaboration With Sweet Home Vanilla
I asked Amanda to describe Sweet Home Vanilla in a few short for words:
At Sweet Home Vanilla, we strive to create products that capture the essence of homemade, and our candles are no exception. Each candle is made with non-toxic fragrance oils, essential oils, and a clean burning natural coconut-beeswax blend. We proudly hand pour our candles in small batches in our home in Pennsylvania.

As the owner of Two Adorable Labs who makes candles using soy wax, I was curious about the benefits of using Beeswax.  Amanda breaks it down for me.  We both agree that coming up with the perfect formulas no matter the choice of wax can be difficult.  Through trial and error and many nights hand pouring our candles, we each found the perfect combinations of wax and scent.

Benefits of Beeswax:
*All natural product
*Stable wax helps increase burn time
*Similar to some indoor plants, beeswax candles can purify the air in your home by pulling toxins through negative ions
*Clean burning wax, which means reduced soot build up on your beautiful candle vessel
*Easy to clean wax with warm water and mild dish soap, so you can repurpose your Mason jar.  We like things clean and free of toxins.
*Our fragrance oils do not contain phthalates; harmful chemicals often used to make product fragrances smell stronger.
*Ongoing research suggests that Phthalates act as endocrine disruptors and may be linked to various health problems.
*Our wicks are also 100% cotton, ensuring an even cleaner burn with proper wick trimming for each burn.

A little bit about Two Adorable Labs Two Adorable Labs is a Lifestyle blog with a daily dose of cuteness. Partially an ode to Jake, Maggie, and fur babies around the world but also talking about animal health, safety, as well as, all things that we enjoy on a daily basis. i.e., home decor, tablescapes, interior design, recipes for humans and our furry friends to name a few. My pups are a huge part of my world and what better way to show them off is through the blog while incorporating all that I love to do.

We are huge supporters of small businesses and donate to many charities.  I created the “Bow Tie Boone” Candle to raise money for a non-profit called Joey’s P.A.W. for animals in need of wheelchairs and prosthetics.  Check out our “Supporting Small Business” page on our site to see other companies we do business with and support.
As the world changes and being a small business owner myself, I see the importance and value in focusing more on what a small business has to offer.  There is nothing more exciting than seeing an order come through for something that you put your heart and soul in to.

Gluten-free:  Yes
Alcohol free:  Yes

*Soy candles are safer for you and your pet. Compared to paraffin wax, soy wax does not have harmful ingredients such as petroleum, a nonrenewable source that contains carcinogenic substances and does not produce a “clean” burn. Soy candles are made from soybeans, a natural, renewable source grown in many regions by local farmers. A candle made from soy wax burns cleaner with little soot released as the candle burns. The soy candle may accumulate some black soot on the jar, but the amount is much less than paraffin candles. Soy candles are also non-toxic, so they won’t release toxins into the air as they burn.

*Derived from the soybean, soy wax is a hydrogenated vegetable oil that turns to a solid at room temperature. After they are harvested, the beans are cleaned, cracked, dehulled, and rolled into flakes. Soy wax contains nothing artificial, which makes it a better alternative to old-fashioned paraffin wax, which is made from petroleum oil and produces harmful by-products when burned or melted. Soy wax is non-toxic making it better both for the environment and your health!

*Fragrance oils do not contain Dibutyl Phthalate. IFRA forbids it. What is IFRA? “The International Fragrance Association (IFRA), based in Geneva, Switzerland, and founded in 1973, is the official self-regulatory representative body of the fragrance industry worldwide. Its main purpose is to ensure the safety of fragrance materials through a dedicated science program.”

*Cleaner burning. No toxins, carcinogens or pollutants which means our candles are less likely to trigger allergies. And no petro-carbon soot like you get from petroleum-based paraffin candles.

*Longer lasting. Soy wax burns cooler which means that you can enjoy your soy wax candle for generally 30-50% longer than a paraffin candle.

*Biodegradable and water-soluble. Since our candles are made out of soybeans, they are naturally biodegradable which makes accidental spills easier to clean with just hot water, soap and some elbow grease.

*No lead or zinc cored wicks are used. Make sure to trim it to ⅛” to keep your candle burning evenly. Keeping your wick at the correct length can also help to prevent the buildup of residue around the candle. Snuffing the candle out using the lid may produce a crackled top when solidified but should not be a problem when lit again.
