Dad’s Sugar Cookies

Dec 12, 2024 | Food, Sweets

Happy Thursday everyone!  Growing up, my Dad’s Sugar Cookies were a family favorite around the holidays.  When my sister and I were young, my parents would make this sugar cookie recipe with us every Christmas.  I can still remember my dad standing at the table mixing up the colored icing for us to ice the cookies.   We grew up in a 100-year-old farmhouse that my parents renovated throughout the years.  Our kitchen was stylish and cozy, and we would sit around our big round farmhouse table making cookies for the holidays.  I wanted to re-create this memory with Mr. TAL and the dogs so I could share it with you.

These cookies are soft, buttery, sugary, and colorful and can be cut in any shape.  I found these snowflake-shaped cookie cutters at Walmart a few years ago.  Mr. TAL and I cut out different sizes and shapes and doubled on some to create a thicker cookie.  We weren’t pros at icing these cookies but we had a great time.  If you are looking for an easy cookie recipe to make this year, try my dad’s sugar cookies and let me know what you think!

We mixed the butter, shortening, and sugar together until creamy and then slowly added the flour, eggs, baking soda, cream of tartar, and vanilla.  While the dough was being refrigerated, we mixed up our icing using the confectioner’s sugar, butter, vanilla, salt, milk, and our favorite colors of food coloring.  Simply blend the sugar and the butter first, making sure you don’t have any lumps, and then add the rest of your ingredients.

We used a rolling pin from Amazon and rolled out the dough approximately 1/4 inches thick and baked the dough at 350 degrees for approximately 8 – 10 minutes (depending on your oven).  Once the cookies were cool, we spread them out on the table for decorating.

*Note:  Don’t forget to buy some parchment paper to lay out before decorating your cookies.  This makes for less mess and easy cleanup.  Plus, the food coloring won’t stain your good table :-).

Notes

Note:  It all depends on the size and shape of your cookie cutter as to the number of cookies this recipe makes.  We made approximately 22 cookies.  If you want to double up on a cookie like we did, just dab a bit of icing on the top of your cookie and seal it with another smaller cookie.  The icing will harden and glue the two cookies together.
