Turkey Table 2023

Nov 14, 2023 | Maggie Lane Designs, Tablescapes, Thanksgiving

Happy Wednesday everyone!  I can’t believe Thanksgiving is next week!!!  My Turkey Table 2023 is my favorite Thanksgiving table yet with the deep, rich colors, silk florals, pumpkins, and pheasants.  I wanted to pull every color from the dishes to the table and I think I was successful :-).  I took Jake and Maggie for a walk and then the three of us put this table together while we waited for Mr. TAL to finish work.

I re-used the centerpiece from my Pumpkins Galore centerpiece changing out the pumpkin lantern and mint pumpkin for the two pheasants I found at TJMaxx.  I picked up some deep blue, turquoise, and white flowers from Walmart to use as fillers.  I pulled the faux artichokes from another arrangement I had made because I loved the pop of green!  I made a quick stop into Dollar General to pick up some Christmas gifts for the dogs and cats at our local shelter and found these adorable little acorn candles.  Every year around Christmas we take a basket to the shelter for the dogs and cats waiting to get adopted.  This year they are getting “Adopt Me” bandanas!  How cute is that!  Ok, back to my table…Mr. TAL said I should be using my homemade soy candles but I think these fit the theme so well!

We are cooking this year so this table is perfect for four people.  Mr. TAL bought a 22 pound turkey and we are making all the usual sides.  I don’t think my family has changed it up much over the years.  We found what we like; turkey gravy, mashed potatoes, stuffing (using Mr. TAL’s family recipe), corn and broccoli, pumpkin pie, rolls and butter but all homemade with love :-).  And I just have to say that my mother makes the best pumpkin pie EVER!  I’m going copy her recipe and make pies just to share them with you!

Everything on this table came from TJMaxx, Home Goods, Walmart, and Dollar General.  Fortunately, Jake and Maggie never beg for food or steal anything from the table.

With the holidays fast approaching, keep in mind our pets can’t eat everything that we can eat.  Considering giving your pet some table scraps? Think about the seasonings and ingredients you used to create your recipes:

Keep your pet away from these dangerous festive foods:

*Turkey. Avoid giving your pet turkey meat, especially fatty dark meat and skin (a small amount of unseasoned white meat is okay), and never give them any leftover bones. Not only are bones a choking hazard, but they can splinter inside your pet’s digestive tract and cause a trip to the emergency vet.

*Garlic, onion, leeks, and chives. These seasonings are common in many Thanksgiving dishes and are toxic to dogs and cats – they can cause destruction of their red blood cells. Avoid giving your pet a bite of anything cooked with these ingredients, like green beans, potatoes, stuffing, or gravy.

*Unbaked dough containing yeast. Unbaked yeast dough can cause a stomach blockage if eaten because the yeast in the dough makes it rise and expand. Plus, the natural fermentation of the yeast in your cat or dog’s stomach can cause alcohol poisoning. If you plan on baking some delicious dinner rolls for Thanksgiving, make sure to proof your dough somewhere that your pet can’t get to it, such as in a turned-off oven or microwave, not right on the counter where it’s often in your pet’s easy reach.

*Desserts. Desserts like pies, fruitcakes, or cookies should be kept out of your pet’s reach as well. Many people know that chocolate is toxic for dogs and cats, but so are raisins, currants, and the popular sugar-substitute xylitol. Xylitol, even in small amounts, is toxic to dogs, so keep that slice of keto-friendly/diabetic-friendly/sugar-free pie to yourself.
