Why Does My Dog Smell Like Fish?

Jan 24, 2023 | Pet Health, Pets

Happy Wednesday everyone!  Today on the blog we are talking about Why Does My Dog Smell Like Fish?  I will admit that Jake And Maggie have had problems off and on since they were pups with their paws smelling like Fritos (see my post on Why Do My Dogs Paws Smell Like Fritos?).  I can honestly say they have never smelled like fish thank goodness but what if they did at some point?  What would that mean?  What would I or anyone else having this problem with their dog do?  Obviously a trip to the vet would be in order but read on to find out what the reasons might be!

She is always happy and loves the attention she gets from the staff!

Fish Flavored Treats / Fish Based Medications:

Are you feeding your pup fish-flavored treats?  Are you giving them fish-based medications, this might be the cause of a fishy smell on their breath or skin.

Fish Oil Supplements:

Fish Oil supplements are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and have numerous health benefits.  If the smell of fish oil is overwhelming or your dog has a fish allergy or sensitivity, it may be necessary to switch to a different type of supplement. There are many alternative options available, such as plant-based omega-3 supplements or krill oil supplements.

Bacterial Infections:

Bacterial infections can also be a potential cause of a fish-like odor in your dog. Skin infections and dental infections are common types of infections that can cause an unpleasant smell in dogs. Skin infections can be caused by a variety of bacteria and may result in redness, swelling, and discharge.

Anal Glands:

Anal gland issues can also be a potential cause of a fish-like odor in your dog and it is actually a very common reason for fishy smells coming from dogs. Anal glands are small glands located near the anus that produce a strong-smelling fluid. Dogs naturally secrete this fluid but in some dogs, the anal glands may become impacted (full) or infected, leading to a fishlike smell.

Aside from the foul, fishy smell, other symptoms of anal gland issues include:

• Scooting or dragging their butt across the floor
• Licking or itching their butt
• Having difficulty pooping
• Presence of blood or pus in the butt area or in their poop

Your dog is scared:

It’s possible for your dog to emit a foul fishy smell from their anal glands, even if there isn’t a problem like a blockage or an infection. It may simply be a part of their fight-or-flight response when they’re frightened, anxious, or stressed.

Dental Disease:

Dental disease in dogs can produce any number of foul odors, with a fishy odor being one possibility.  Some dogs may have a genetic predisposition to dental disease, or dental problems may arise if you haven’t been diligently taking care of your dog’s teeth.  The fishy smell might be especially apparent if a dental infection is present.

I’ve talked about dental disease before in a few posts:

Urinary Tract Infection:

If your dog has fishy-smelling urine, it can signify a urinary tract infection.  This occurs when there is a bacterial overgrowth.

I’m Bobbi Jo, a lab-lover who took my passion for animals and dogs and turned it into something bigger.  When I adopted Jake and Maggie, my love for them became the driving force behind Two Adorable Labs, and my blog was born.  My hope is to not only share them with the world, but to help educate others on the importance of animal health and well-being.

I love hearing from all of you and do my best to respond to each and every one of you.  I always enjoy your comments, feedback, and suggestions so keep them coming!  If I’ve posted a recipe (for our human and our furry friends) and you try it, don’t forget to tag me on Instagram @twoadorablelabs and use #twoadorablelabs.

If you do try and love my recipes, I would greatly appreciate a comment and rating.  I read every single one and respond to them.  It also lets Google know that the website contains quality content.  The more comments and 5-star ratings, the more Google will show my blog in search results!  Thank you so much!
